What You Need to Know When Shipping Fragile and Valuable Cargo

tips
Transporting fragile and valuable goods requires special care. Even a small mistake, repacking, or weak packaging can cause damage.

At LATCARRIER, we always want your cargo to arrive safe and sound. But remember: packaging is always the responsibility of the sender.

As a client (the customer of the transport service), you must keep this in mind and, if necessary, remind the sender of their duty to pack the goods properly.

1. Packaging — sender’s responsibility

Fragile and valuable goods must be packed with extra care.

• The sender is fully responsible for packaging.
• As the client, you should keep this in mind and remind your supplier (local or foreign) to pack properly.
• Poorly packed goods become vulnerable cargo in transit, and damage is often not the carrier’s fault.

Tip: use strong boxes, multiple protective layers, bubble wrap, foam, dividers, and secure pallets with stretch film and straps. If in doubt — we can advise you!

2. Fewer handlings — safer delivery

The fewer times cargo is transferred from one vehicle to another, the lower the risk of damage.

• The best solution is a direct truck, door-to-door.
• This eliminates terminal handling and extra risks.
• Unlike postal and courier services, direct transport ensures safer handling.

Yes, direct transport may cost more — but it’s better to pay a little extra than risk damage to your cargo.

3. Insurance: why CMR is limited

In transport, the carrier takes on the biggest risks compared to the sender and the receiver. But this responsibility is formally limited by the CMR Convention.

CMR insurance only covers minimal carrier liability and rarely matches the actual value of the cargo.
• That’s why LATCARRIER always reminds: fragile and valuable goods should be additionally insured (Cargo Insurance).
• This type of insurance covers the full cargo value and protects your interests.

4. Responsibility and partnership

At LATCARRIER, we do everything to make sure your cargo arrives safely:

• we handle every shipment with care,
• we select the best routes and vehicles,
• we advise clients on packaging and insurance.

Keep in mind:

👉 packaging is always the sender’s responsibility,

👉 the client should remember this and remind the sender,

👉 the carrier takes transport risks but is limited by CMR,

👉 full protection is only achieved with proper packaging and additional insurance.

So,

To make sure your fragile or valuable goods arrive safely:

1. Ensure the sender packs them properly.
2. Choose direct transport, even if it costs more.
3. Arrange separate insurance.

By following these steps, you minimize risks and gain confidence in reliable delivery. Let your transport with LATCARRIER always be smooth and successful! 🚛✨
